Azores
Situated in the Atlantic Ocean, between Europe and North America, the
Azores are in the Lisbon parallel (39º43’). The nine islands
have a total surface of 2333 km2 and an Economic Exclusive Zone of 999.300
km2. Its areas vary between 747 km2 (São Miguel) and 17 Km2 (Corvo).
The volcanic cone of Pico, in the island with the same name, reaches the
2.351m and is the highest point of the Azores and of Portugal. The total
population of the archipelago is 237.935 inhabitants (1991 census).
São Miguel
São Miguel, the archipelago’s largest island has a surface
of 759,41Km2 with 65 km of length and 16 of maximum width. The island
has two volcanic massifs, separated by a low altitude central ridge. Its
highest point – Pico da Vara – with 1080m, is placed in the
eastern massif. The great craters of Sete Cidades, Fogo and Furnas present
wonderful crystalline water lagoons. The island is situated 25º30
longitude West and 37º50’ latitude North.
Faial da Terra
Going 11km far from Povoação we come across with this picturesque
and idyllic place to which Gaspar Furtuoso called “Island’s
Crib”. Like Povoação, this small village is situated
in a small valley by the sea, surrounded by steep sources and crossed
by a small river.
It is a quiet and peaceful place, where the soft light makes of this
landscape a place where the vastness of the ocean contrasts with the smallness
of the land.
It’s a small place that soon may become a pleasant alternative for
those who look for some days involved with the nature’s serenity.
The place of Sanguinho will become, within few years, a touristic enterprise,
taking advantage of the houses that, for years, remained abandoned, in
a place where the silence and the beauty invade our soul.
Moinho do Passal
The Moinho do Passal of S. Miguel is a water-mill that has been comfortably
and tastefully renovated for country guests in Faial da Terra, one of
the most beautiful parishes in all the Azores, found near the sea in a
magnificent verdant valley, approximately 70 Km distant from the city
of Ponta Delgada.
Found round about this profoundly peaceful area, are parks and forest
reserves, mountains, cliffs, valleys, streams, waterfalls and inlets,
all in a panorama of exuberant vegetation. Nature in its primitive state.
